Took my 2014 Charger RT out for a nice long drive up the coast to Khorfakkan last Friday because the weather was actually decent and I wanted to stretch its legs a bit, but on the way back as I was coming into the city limits and hit the usual Sharjah traffic the transmission started acting like it couldn’t decide which gear it wanted to be in when I was coasting to a stop, this sort of lazy downshift that makes the whole car shudder a little and then a firm thud when it finally grabs first at the signal, and of course the temperature gauge for the trans climbed a bit higher than I’m comfortable with given our summers. I’ve been babying it around town all week and it seems okay when the fluid is cool but once everything warms up that same hesitation comes right back, and I’m trying to figure out if a simple fluid and filter change using the proper ATF+4 will sort this out or if I’m looking at a sticking solenoid or something deeper in the valve body because these Mercedes derived 5 speeds are usually pretty stout but they absolutely hate dirty fluid and heat. A friend of mine with a Wrangler had something similar and his guy just swapped the conductor plate and connector sleeve and it was back to normal, but I’m not trying to throw parts at it without a proper diagnosis and I’d rather find a Dodge Transmission Workshop Sharjah that actually knows these NAG1 units and won’t just tell me I need a full rebuild because they saw a V8 badge. Anyone know a place that’s familiar with these older Mopar transmissions or should I just bite the bullet and have the dealer run a full diagnostic even though their labor rate makes me want to cry every time.
